Three Switches

This puzzle can help in your household...at least. Imagine 3 switches and one lightbulb connected to just one of the switches. How can you determine which switch turns on the bulb if you only want to go from the switches to the bulb once? The switches are clearly marked indicating which orientation is on, the lightbulb is an ordinary household incandescent bulb, and you do not have any pretty assistants or apparatus such as mirrors available, so it's not a trick question.

Also, for more advanced people, try and solve it for four switches? (hint: you can change the lightbulb type.)

Flick th first switch and leave it for a minute switch it off and flip the second switch, go into the room. If the bulb is on then it's the second switch, if the bulb is off but warm then it's the first switch and if the bulb is off and cool then its the third switch.
